  A surfer gets to grips with the waves on Monday |
Good news! There was a decent swell pushing through at Fistral Beach today. Every surfing event needs waves but the one thing you can't arrange is the ocean. Even the North Shore of Hawaii can go flat.Cornish seas have been known to change from as calm as a lake one day to a perfect storm the next. The Boardmasters is in luck though as the forecast shows contestable waves throughout the week. Waiting competitors have been passing the time by using a powered watercraft to hurl themselves into waves, using the extra speed to perform aerial manoeuvres off watery ramps. Quite a spectacle for the determined sunbathers who, despite the odd rain shower, were still out in bikinis on the beach. I didn't take my waterproof jacket off all day, but then it does have good pockets for microphone batteries. Everyone's looking forward to the first round of the men's event which get underway on Tuesday. Ex-British champion Sam Lamiroy will be one of just four British entrants amongst 150 internationals. Today the under-18s began proceedings at the Grom Search finals. 'Grommet' is the name for a junior surfer, no one has yet been able to tell me why! Hurrah for Neptune, there's going to be swell. Keep doing your wave dance.
