Cornish surfers are preparing to battle against top internationals as the Boardmasters event returns to Newquay. The seaside town will host seven days of extreme sports including a five-star international surfing contest which is part of the global tour. Newquay's Russell Winter, who won the Boardmasters title in 2002, will be competing for the title. And contest director Dave Reed told BBC Radio Cornwall: "It's a big challenge for a lot of the local riders." He added: "They'll face tough heats against guys from Hawaii, America, Brazil and Japan. "When you're up against the best in the world, if you make mistakes you're going to be eliminated, it's very cut-throat." | We have a job to do and by the end of the week we have to get to a final and a result |
Organisers will hold the heats to coincide with the best possible conditions as summer waves can vary from as small as one foot to well overhead. "We've put a plan in place for what we expect to happen but we have to allow for that plan to change depending on the surf," explained Reed. "Surf in Cornwall isn't always consistent in summer but we have a job to do and by the end of the week we have to get to a final and a result." There will be over 150 international surfers competing at the Boardmasters which is being held in Newquay for the 26th year.
