Mounts Bay are the new World Pilot Gig men's champions after finishing ahead of rivals Caradon at the weekend.

It is the first time the team have lifted the trophy in their history.

Captain Gary Rich on BBC Radio Cornwall: "It's a dream come true. We've been dreaming about this moment for years and years and years."

Meanwhile Falmouth won the women's title for the ninth time in their gig Irene Too, a record entry of 111 gigs competed in the event on the Scillies.

Caradon had won the men's event for 12 of the past 13 years before Mounts Bay took the title on Sunday.

"I think every rower is the same, whether you're rowing in an A crew or a D crew, one time you always think about winning the world championships and we've finally done it, it's awesome," said Rich.
