Team numbers in the 20th annual PBS Jersey Petanque Open have fallen to 88, down on last year's record number of entries by 24.

More than 40 of the participating teams are travelling to the island for the weekend of competition.

President of the Jersey Petanque Club Joan Le Mercier said: "[the event's] success year-on-year bodes well for the future of petanque in Jersey."

More than 170 players have registered for the individual Melee on Sunday.
