Paul Murray handsprings over a defeated Michael McBratney |
In wrestling terms surely nothing could be better than the final of the six stones finals at Carlisle Wrestling Club's Junior Points night. The first bout saw two brothers, David and Kieron Miller pull out all the stops, as first one then the other had the advantage.
David, older and slightly heavier, took the first fall with a buttock, but Kieron fought back with amazing sophistication for his age.
Kieron defended well and stabbed his right foot down to catch his brother off guard, bringing him over with a rare right side cross-buttock.
Kieron also went on to win the under-12 age group in a final with Philip Potts, son of former champion Andy.
Paul Murray of Arlecdon seemed to dominate in the spectacular falls department.
Time and again he finished his opponents off with a hipe and a cartwheel, winning the eight-and-a-half stones.
Murray was within one fall of winning the 10st final but Craig Naylor tightened his act and won with hipes and the back-heel as the 'coup de grace.
Wasdale's Naylor is studying sport at Newton Rigg and is keenly developing his skills under the tutelage of Alan Jones and Andrew Carlile.
There was glory for Craig Ridley of Slaggyford after he received the Performance of the Night trophy.
Too heavy to qualify for any of the weights, he had to wait for the Under-15s where he faced strong competition from the likes of Joe Thompson, Paul Murray and Jack Brown.
Through it all, Ridley went for his chips like the mature youngster he is with a series of manoeuvres including a splatting hank and a swirling, swinging hipe.
Whatever was needed, he had the answer, and that form took him through to a win in the Under-18s as well.
