Wrestling is looking beyond its usual horizons, as preparations are made for two international events. The events in question are the Brittany Backhold Championships at the end of February and the Espoirs and Women's Championships in Tenerife at the end of March.
Andrew Carlile and David Atkinson this week went to Rothbury Wrestling Club with a pile of 'rocheds', the canvas tunic used in Breton wrestling, to introduce the Rothbury lads to a new style.
The competition they are preparing for is the European Espoirs Championships, last held in Lime House School, Dalston, when we organised the event in 2006. This year the wrestlers will travel to Tenerife in the Canary Islands.
To be an 'espoirs' a wrestler has to be at least 16 and no more than 20 years of age.
The European Female Championships are held alongside the Espoirs. So far none of our female wrestlers have participated, but Tracy Hodgson would be a good prospect, except that she is injured with a dodgy knee.
A party of 30 (wrestlers, officials, coaches and parents) will repeat last year's invasion of Carhaix, the Breton town which has hosted Backhold Championships for several years.
The details of the group have been sent to the Breton organisers, but anyone wishing to add their name could still attend. We are, after all, travelling in a 49 seater.
