Pippa Funnell and Primmore's Pride retained their lead after the cross- country round on day three of the Badminton Horse Trials. Funnell incurred 3.6 time penalties to head fellow Briton William Fox-Pitt on Tamarillo by 1.6 going into Sunday's final showjumping section.
Olympic champion Leslie Law fell from both of his mounts.
He was unseated by Shear H20 at fence 28 while Athens star Shear l'Eau slipped up landing over number 13.
Funnell was delighted to have kept Primmore's Pride in check after struggling with him in past events.
"My work has paid off and I had him under control with help from a different noseband I unearthed in my tackroom," said Funnell.
Fox-Pitt said of 2004 winner Tamarillo: "He saved my bacon coming out of the Quarry, but his legs came up like an aeroplane and he sailed over."
Japan's Yoshiaki Oiwa lies third after the cross country on his Badminton debut.
But Oiwa said his 18-year-old French bred Voyou du Roc, who will be retired after the event, "is not a good showjumper" and does not expect a clear round in the final.
Fifty-six of the 71 starters completed the cross country course on Saturday.
