Ben Hawes opened the Great Britain scoring |
Great Britain's men's hockey team clinched fifth place at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Madrid, thanks to a 3-2 victory over New Zealand. GB had already secured their place at the Athens Games with a win over Belgium on Thursday.
Goals from Surbiton's Ben Hawes, Cannock midfielder Mike Johnson and three-time Olympian Russell Garcia put GB in control.
Although New Zealand pulled two goals back late on, GB held on for victory.
Hawes continued his good form in the tournament with his fourth penalty corner in three matches to give his side a 27th-minute lead.
Johnson doubled the advantage eight minutes after half-time and Garcia, recovered from a hamstring problem, made it 3-0 in the 46th minute.
New Zealand produced an immediate reply through David Koosof's penalty corner and Ryan Archibald's goal from a set-piece seven minutes from time increased the pressure.
