| Baxter's turbulent times ![]() Baxter will hope to get his medal back Alain Baxter has lost appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, BBC Sport Online looks back at his story. 23 February 2002: Alain Baxter celebrates as he wins a bronze medal for Great Britain at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Britain's first ski medal. 27 February: Baxter returns home to Scotland to a hero's welcome with thousands of fans welcoming him back in Aviemore. 1 March: The British Olympic Association informs Baxter he has failed a drugs test. 5 March: It is announced to the media that Baxter's post-race urine sample has tested positive for the banned substance methamphetamine. However, he denies knowingly taking a performance-enhancing drug. 21 March: Baxter is stripped of his Olympic bronze medal by the International Olympic Committee's executive committee. Baxter claims the positive drugs test came from an over-the-counter nasal inhaler which he bought in the US. 11 April: Baxter lodges an appeal against the IOC's decision to strip him of his bronze medal. He takes his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. 23 April: In an interview, Olympic chief Jacques Rogge says he has no sympathy for Baxter. And the president of the IOC says there are no plans to re-open the case because it could set a dangerous precedent. 3 June: Baxter receives a three month ban by the International Ski Federation (FIS) and cannot race until 15 December. FIS states it believes Baxter's explanation and imposes the smallest sanction possible for a first doping offence. 16 August: Baxter wins an appeal against the length of the ban imposed by FIS and can start racing immediately. 5 and 6 September: Baxter has his appeal against the International Olympic Committee's decision to strip him of his bronze medal heard in London. 16 October: The Court of Arbitration for Sport announces IOC decision stands - Baxter has lost medal appeal. |
