| Thorpe on target ![]() Thorpe almost broke his own world record Ian Thorpe brought his gold medal tally at the Pan Pacific swimming championships to three with victory in the 200m freestyle on Monday. Not to be outdone, women's 100m backstroke world record holder Natalie Coughlin claimed her second gold. Thorpe had won the 400m freestyle and anchored the winning 4x100m freestyle relay to success on Saturday. He just missed out on improving his own world record in the 200m freestyle when he clocked a time of one minute 44.06 seconds. Fellow Australian Grant Hackett was second in 1:45.84 while American Nate Dusing took the bronze in 1:48.11.
"I was happy with the time and happy with the result," Thorpe said. "I'm pretty tired at the moment to be honest - I'm doing well so far and hope it continues for the rest of the meet." Thorpe's victory allowed Australia move on top of the gold medal standings but the USA hit back soon after to level matters again. Natalie Coughlin swam the second sub-one minute women's 100m backstroke in history to take gold. Coughlin, who finished in a time of 59.72 seconds, got the better of Australia's Diana Caylub to take her second gold medal of the event. She had also emerged victorious in the 100m butterfly. | See also: 25 Aug 02 | Other Sports 24 Aug 02 | Other Sports 14 Aug 02 | Other Sports 14 Aug 02 | Other Sports Top Other Sports stories now: Links to more Other Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
