| Thorpe targets six wins in Japan ![]() Thorpe finished with six golds in Manchester Australia's Ian Thorpe has dropped the 800m freestyle and 100m backstroke from his programme for this month's Pan Pacific Championships in Japan. He will only contest the 100, 200 and 400m freestyle and three relays in Yokahama. Thorpe, 19, who holds three freestyle world records, was the outstanding performer at the recent Commonwealth Games, winning six golds out of a possible seven. He cruised to victory in the 100, 200 and 400m freestyle, becoming the first swimmer to win all three, and was part of three Australian relay wins. He also captured a silver in the backstroke and broke his own 400m freestyle world record. "With Ian it's always a matter of trying to juggle his events, work out the right programme," Australia men's head coach Alan Thompson said. "This time it just wasn't going to work out." Australia's 1500m freestyle world record holder Grant Hackett will be going for seven wins in the 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500m freestyle plus two relays. | See also: 05 Aug 02 | Other Sports 02 Aug 02 | Swimming Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Other Sports stories now: Links to more Other Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
