| Thorpe rejects record bid ![]() Thorpe may try some other events in Athens Ian Thorpe will not attempt to match Mark Spitz's Olympic record of winning seven gold medals at the Athens' games in 2004. The Australian teenager left the Commonwealth Games in Manchester with six golds, equalling the record jointly held by Susan O'Neill and Graham Smith. He also won six golds at last year's world championships in Japan, but has acknowledged that breaking Spitz's record, set in Munich in 1972, is beyond him. "I don't think it'll be done again," said the Australian "It's something I don't want to go out there and beat, be part of or extend myself to because it's not me. "I'm not doing something to have accolades or the recognition of doing something that someone else has done - and nor do I think it's possible."
Thorpe's bid to win seven gold medals in Manchester came unstuck when he was beaten by world champion Matt Welsh in the 100 metres backstroke, an event he only took up for fun. Thorpe holds the world records for 200, 400 and 800 freestyle and won the 100-200-400 freestyle treble in Manchester. He has said that he will continue to explore the possibility of doing other events, but he will have to look at the timetable of events for Athens before deciding on his plan of attack. |
