| Dutch to stage new tournament Barneveld will be one of the stars at the World Trophy Holland have won the right to stage a major new darts tournament, to be named the World Trophy. The event will be staged in Utrecht from 7-15 September and will feature the top 28 players on the British Darts Organisation (BDO) ranking list. Four wild cards will also be awarded, allowing stars like Bobby George to be involved. "We think this tournament will be good for darts, and it could lead to other countries staging big events," said promoter Ad Schoofs, who is also the manager of 1998 and 1999 Embassy champion Raymond Barneveld. "I plan to talk to five different companies who could become the tournament sponsor, which would enable us to do more for the players. "But the event will go ahead even if a sponsor cannot be arranged." The prize fund for the tournament will be 164,000 euros for the men's event and 33,500 euros for the women's. The BBC, who on Friday announced they would be covering the Embassy World Championship for three more years from 2003, have expressed an interest in televising the tournament. |
