GB hockey captain Brett Garrard saw his side finish ninth |
Great Britain secured ninth place in the Olympic hockey tournament after beating South Africa 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out on Friday. The sides were locked 1-1 after extra-time but GB held their nerve in searing heat to relegate South Africa to 10th.
Meanwhile, Pakistan took fifth, New Zealand came sixth, India were seventh and South Korea eighth.
Pakistan beat New Zealand 4-2 in their play-off, with three penalties from drag flick expert Sohail Abbas.
"I'm happy to have scored today but we expected to be on the medal stand so fifth place is still disappointing," said the 29-year-old.
Eight-times Olympic champions India, who have not won a medal since 1980, defeated South Korea 5-2 in their match.
At the bottom of the table, Egypt equalised twice against Argentina but two second-half goals from Mario Almada gave the South American side a 4-2 victory for 11th place.
