The victory over New Zealand ensured Argentina's passage alongside China into the semi-finals.

Luciana Aymer put the world champions ahead in the eighth minute and Paula Oneto and Agustina Garcia rounded off the scoring in the second half.

The Netherlands also secured their berth in the last four without having to pick up a hockey stick thanks to Australia's draw against South Korea.

A victory against the Dutch on Sunday may not be enough for the "Hockeyroos" to clinch the last semi-final slot.

Their place will depend on the result and goal difference in the match between South Korea and Germany.

Australia, who won golds at the Atlanta Games in 1996 and at home in Sydney four years ago, had chances to wrap up the points against South Korea having twice taken the lead.

Louise Dobson put the Hockeyroos ahead in the sixth minute following a penalty corner, but Park Mi-Hyun drew level four minutes before the interval.

The Koreans, who wasted eight penalty corners in the first half and two in the second, conceded a second goal in the 43rd when an Powell drove the ball home.

The lead, however, lasted only three minutes as Kim Seong-Eun took advantage of a defensive lapse to swoop on a loose ball inside the circle and score.
