Four goals from penalty corner expert Sohail Abbas helped Pakistan to a resounding 7-0 victory over Egypt in Group A of the men's hockey. Abbas took his tally to 254 goals from 206 matches, scoring twice in the first half and two more after the interval.
Kashif Jawaad scored a brace and captain Muhammad Nadeem also got his name on the scoresheet.
Rivals India scored twice in the last two minutes to secure a remarkable 4-2 win over South Africa in group B.
Goals from Greg Nicol and Craig Fulton gave South Africa a 2-0 lead in the first 12 minutes.
But the Indians rallied through goals from Dhanraj Pillay and Baljit Dhillon either side of half-time.
The match looked to be heading for a draw until captain Dilip Tirkey netted a penalty corner in the 69th minute.
And Gagan Ajit Singh capped off the victory with the final goal just before the final whistle, much to the delight of India's German coach Gerhard Rach.
India, who lost their opening match 3-1 against defending champions the Netherlands, will play Australia on Thursday.
