The US men's basketball team of NBA stars salvaged some pride by defeating Lithuania 104-96 to win Olympic bronze. The start of the game was delayed for 40 minutes after both sides turned up in the same coloured strips.
When the match finally started it was close for three quarters until forward Shawn Marion helped the Americans open up a vital lead which they never lost.
"We wanted gold but we'll take anything right now," said Marion, who finished the match with 22 points.
"When you're not playing for gold and you're playing for third, it hurts. We had to dig deep down but at least we are going home with something," added Marion.
"We still have a bad taste in our mouth after the semi-final loss that cost us a spot in the final," said point guard Allen Iverson.
"But we came here to represent our country the best we could. We didn't want to go back without a medal. I'm glad we finished the tournament on a positive note."
Arvydas Macijauskas bagged 24 points for Lithuania, who were looking to win their fourth consecutive Olympic bronze.
Argentina won the gold medal after beating Italy 84-69.
