Britain's taekwondo fighters have won an unprecedented four medals at the European Championships despite only sending an eight-strong team to Rome. Doncaster's Caroline Fisher won silver in the -51kg weight category, as did Liverpool's Martin Stamper (-62kg). Scot Louise Mair (-47kg) and Tyrone Robinson (-58kg) from Mansfield both won bronzes in their competitions. "Winning four medals from only eight competitors is a great achievement," said performance director Gary Hall. "In addition, we had a further three athletes who reached the quarter-finals." Britain sent a small team to the event due to the unsanctioned introduction of electronic point-scoring equipment. Hall added: "In light of the introduction of a new electronic body protector, which has yet to receive the World Federation's approval, we were a little apprehensive about how well they would work. | 606: DEBATE |
"Despite their last-minute introduction, the team responded very well to the change in tactics required. "Had the scoring system remained what we were used to, I think we could have come away with more than four medals." Britain has qualified places in three different weight categories for the Olympics in Beijing in August, with the team due to be named next month. Of the three athletes who won the places for GB, Robinson was the only one to compete in Rome. Doncaster's Sarah Stevenson and Dorchester's Aaron Cook competed instead at the Belgian Open the previous week. Both won their weight categories in an event which, unlike the Europeans, featured the same scoring system that will be used at the Olympics. Liverpool's Bianca Walkden and Manchester's Michael Harvey won silver medals in Belgium.
