Exmouth sailor Joe Glanfield and his partner Nick Rogers are just two points off the lead in the 470 World Championships in Australia. The pair, who won silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics, are two points off the leaders Andrea Trani and Gabrio Zandana from Italy.
But fellow Britons Nic Asher and Elliot Willis are in second, a point ahead.
There is still one race of the qualifying section to go at the regatta in Melbourne, Australia.
The pair are in good form after a win in the Asia- Pacific championships on the same water earlier this week.
And in that regatta they were out of the top ten until the final two races before staging a comeback. A similar finish in the worlds would see them cruise to global gold.
The pair need a good performance to secure the single British berth in the 470 boat for the Beijing Olympics this summer.
