Olympic 470 silver medallist Joe Glanfield and crewmate Nick Rogers have taken gold in the Asia Pacific sailing championships in Melbourne. The win is critical to their chances of being confirmed as part of the Great Britain team for the 2008 Olympics.
It is also stands them in good stead for the 470 world championships which have just started at the same venue.
"This year is all about Beijing, it's important that we peak at the right time," Devon's Glanfield said.
The crew were out of the top 10 after the first two days of racing but rose up the rankings after two second places on day three.
Glanfield, who hails from Exmouth, said: "We were coming first towards the end of both races, unfortunately we couldn't maintain it, the important point is that we made the medal race and with four races left we have a great chance of winning".
Glanfield and Rogers managed to take advantage of the tough race conditions and lead the regatta by eight points going into the final day.
They used all their experience in light winds to claim a convincing first in the Medal race and finish in the gold medal position.
