Favourites defy conditions to win

Rowing

Rowers Ian Blandin and James Ramsden battled against the elements to win Jersey's St Aubin Bay Race which was held on Thursday.

Tough 18 mile-an-hour winds did not upset the favourites who finished first in a time of 54 minutes and 25 seconds.

The Aztec crew women won the Ladies' fours class and, in the men's fours, the Just Do It team came second.

Many of the competitors had also taken part in a charity row from Guernsey the week before.

It was not a particularly memorable day for the Jersey Airport Fire Service team who were competing in their first-ever competitive race.

With the rough conditions it wasn't the debut they would have been wishing for after taking longer than others to finish when they took a small detour the wrong way around the Vrachiere Rock.
