Livingston and Fell have been in great form this year

Katy Livingston and Heather Fell are confident of winning medals at the Beijing Olympics after being selected for Britain's Modern Pentathlon team.

The duo beat Georgina Harland, who won Olympic bronze in Athens four years ago, and Mhairi Spence to the places.

Livingston, who won World Championship bronze this month, said: "I've proved I can podium in big competitions and I'm going with medals on my mind."

Steph Cook won gold and Kate Allenby bronze when the sport debuted in 2000.

Since women's modern pentathlon - which combines fencing, swimming, shooting, riding and running - was introduced to the Olympics at Sydney, British athletes have taken half of the medals on offer.

And Livingston, 24, and 25-year-old Fell are well placed to continue Britain's success having won World Cup events in Egypt and England respectively this year, while Fell also finished second in the 2007 European Championships.

Fell said: "Beijing could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"With five different sports, we all know if one goes wrong on the day, that's it, but if I can get everything right on the day I know I have a chance of a medal."

Team GB Modern Pentathlon coach Dominic Mahony added: "They thoroughly deserve their selection.

"Katy and Heather have proven with their performances both this and last year that they are outstanding athletes in a very strong pool of talented British women.

"We're also pleased that we have two young athletes with very real medal hopes, both in Beijing, and potentially at London 2012 too."
