Britain's Katy Livingston has claimed the first World Cup victory of her modern pentathlon career in Egypt.

The Bath 24-year-old, who has already achieved the qualifying standard for the 2008 Olympic Games, won the opening round of the 2008 series in Cairo.

Livingston (5704 pts) won the 3km race to beat Ukraine's Victoria Tereshuk (5636) and Pole Paulina Boenisz (5540).

Team-mates Heather Fell, Mhairi Spence and Lindsey Weedon finished in 16th, 30th and 35th places, respectively.

Livingston started the day well with a strong shoot and followed that up with a personal best in a senior international competition in the fencing.

She produced a solid swim and a good performance in the show jumping arena - only knocking down one fence - to put her second in ahead of the run.

GB performance director Jan Bartu said: "Katy produced a really good performance. It was a fantastic achievement for her personally as well as for the British modern pentathlon programme.

"She rode well and that gave her the strength and confidence to run so well. It was a tough race, but she fought well to the end."

Her gold was Livingston's second World Cup medal after her silver in Moscow last year.

She finished sixth at last year's European Championships to achieve the qualifying standard for Beijing.
