Interview: modern pentathlete Sam Weale

Modern pentathlete Sam Weale says he is making great progess in the sport after winning the bronze medal at the World Cup event at Millfield in Somerset.

"It's the first time I was on the winning podium since I was a junior," the 26-year-old told BBC Points West.

"In terms of qualifying for Beijing, I've taken a massive step forward.

"I'm in an Olympic position at the moment, and one more top-10 finish at the World Cup this year could guarantee me a spot at Beijing."

"There's more competitions for people to get more points, but for myself to get more points too.

"There are two more World Cups and the World Championships, and I'm hopeful on improving on this weekend's performance."

The Somerset public played their role in Weale's triumph, turning out in numbers despite the abysmal weather on Saturday.

"I've got to stay thank you to all the people who stay and spurred me on because it was fantastic support," said the 26-year-old, who is based locally at the University of Bath.

The crowd included Weale's twin brother, Chris, who plays in goal for Bristol City and was on the bench for their 2-1 win over Norwich that put them top of the Championship.

"He got there with half an hour to spare. It's the first time he's seen me in international competition and I'm glad I could get on the podium and do him proud.

"At the end of this year it could be fantastic. If things go well, we'll have an Olympic athlete and a Premier League footballer in the family."
