Australia and the Netherlands look likely to progress to the Olympic men's hockey semi-finals at the expense of Great Britain.

The two sides, who have combined to win gold at the last three Games, battled to a 2-2 draw in Pool B on Sunday.

GB just managed a 1-1 draw with bottom-placed Pool B side Canada after Matt Daly equalised three minutes from time.

GB now need a big win over Australia on Tuesday and a bad Netherlands loss to Pakistan if they are to go through.

Pakistan beat South Africa 3-1 but were eliminated from medal contention by other results.

Austin Smith scored South Africa's first goal of the tournament was followed by goals from Pakistan's Shakeel Abbasi and Muhammad Saqlain in the second half.

In Group A, Spain, Germany, South Korea and New Zealand all still can qualify for the medal round.

Spain face South Korea - and can guarantee a semi-final spot with victory - while Germany play New Zealand on Tuesday.

Canada, who came into the game against Great Britain without a point, took a second-half lead through Ken Pereira in the first match of the day.

But they still needed another goal to keep their hopes of victory alive and despite late pressure, Canada held out.

Indiscipline was a key feature of GB's performance, with James Tindall in particular sin-binned for throwing Canada captain Rob Short over his shoulder in a dangerous move.

It was just one of a number of incidents in a dirty game, with Canada as guilty as GB.

Coach Jason Lee said: "We knew it would be close but the first 25 minutes showed we had the quality to win. Two pieces of ill discipline cost us.

"When they went down to 10 men at the end of the first half we had a golden opportunity but unfortunately we then matched it.

"At half-time the last thing we said was do not let ill discipline cost us.

"I have told James I can't defend it. I think he will get an additional ban from the FIH [the world governing body].

"He has been very good and very bad for us in this tournament."
