Video - GB women beat New Zealand Great Britain kept alive their hopes of reaching the women's Olympic hockey semi-finals by coming from behind to beat New Zealand 2-1 in Pool B. The Black Sticks took the lead through Gemma Flynn but goals from Alex Danson and Crista Cullen gave Britain their first win of the tournament. Britain are now fourth in their group with two games remaining. Elsewhere, defending champions Germany scored three second-half goals to beat the United States 4-2 in Pool B. In Pool A, both the Netherlands and Australia made it three wins out of three, beating China 1-0 and South Africa 3-0 respectively. Britain enjoyed the upper hand in the opening stages against New Zealand but they could not make their pressure count and went behind after a skilful run from Caryn Paewai earned them a penalty corner. When Lizzy Igasan's powerful shot was half-saved, Flynn was on hand by the post to dive and slot the ball home. Britain levelled almost immediately, Charlotte Craddock helping on a cross and Danson nipping in front of the keeper to guide the chest-high ball into the goal. | 606: DEBATE |
Once level, Britain started to dominate and thought they had scored a second goal on the stroke of half-time. However, the umpire ruled out Anne Panter's effort following a short corner because it did not strike the backboard. Undaunted, Britain grabbed the winner from another penalty corner, Cullen flicking low and hard into the corner to give her side their first win of the tournament. They are now level on four points with Japan, although they are below the Asian side on goal difference. "I am delighted, not only with the victory but with the manner of it," said Team GB coach Danny Kerry. "In the second half, we generated a lot of opportunities." Cullen added: "A win is what we came for and I am pleased we fulfilled that task. We had the lion's share of possession but it wasn't easy." Britain finish with games against the Japanese and the United States while Argentina, who are currently second in Pool B, have still to face champions Germany in one of their final two games. Germany moved clear at the top of Pool B with their third straight win, but they had to come from behind after Tiffany Snow put the US into the lead. Scores from Natascha Keller, Fanny Rinne, Natascha Rodewold and Anke Kuehn ensured the win for Germany. In the other Pool B game Alejandra Gulla and Claudia Burkart got on the scoresheet as Argentina defeated Japan 2-1, Keiko Muira scoring for the Japanese. The Netherlands, who are ranked number one in the world, needed a 21st minute Maartje Paumen strike from near the edge of the circle to beat the hosts in Pool A. They are behind Australia, who beat South Africa courtesy of strikes from Nicole Hudson, Angela Lambert and Casey Eastham, on goal difference. In the other Pool A game, goals from Nuria Camon and Pilar Sanchez gave Spain a 2-1 win over South Korea.
