Great Britain suffered a setback in their bid to make the men's hockey semi-finals with a 1-0 defeat by Athens silver medallists the Netherlands.

Taeke Taekema gave the Netherlands victory when he fired home a short corner into the left-hand side of the net with just seven minutes remaining.

In other Group A matches, Pakistan bounced back from their defeat to Great Britain with a 3-1 victory over Canada.

Defending Olympic champions Australia thumped South Africa 10-0.

Great Britain now lie third behind Australia and the Netherlands in the standings, with the top two progressing to the semis.

The defeat was particularly harsh on Jason Lee's side, who produced a resolute display to frustrate one of the pre-tournament favourites.

"It is fairly well established that Holland are one of the best teams in the world and we're not but we are trying to push that kind of standard," said the GB coach.

"We tried to play a game based on quality and hard work and if we did that we knew we could make it close - providing we didn't give corners away.

"I'm very proud of how we have played. We would have been very happy with a point but when you have been around international hockey long enough you know you have to play for 70 minutes."

The Dutch dominated the opening exchanges, forcing Scotland goalkeeper Alastair McGregor into two fine saves to twice deny Matthijs Brouwer.

A superb dribbling run from Robert van der Horst saw him beat six defenders before chipping McGregor - only for his shot to riccohet off the post.

Taekema - the world's best set-piece exponent with 150 goals in 176 games - had failed to find the net on two occasions in the second half.

But the 28-year-old made no mistake with his third penalty corner on 63 minutes, drilling the ball past McGregor after Tindall had been sin-binned for tripping Timme Hoyng.
