James Tindall opened the scoring after just 51 seconds after good work from Alastair Wilson and Barry Middleton. GB then made it 2-0 after 14 minutes through Rob Moore before Ashley Jackson increased the lead further. The victory was Great Britain's first over Pakistan at the Olympics since 1952. Barry Middleton celebrates with team-mates |
Head coach Jason Lee paid tribute to his side following their win. He said: "It was a brilliant start. "I had hardly settled into my seat in my coaching box (in the stand) when we scored and I got told off for shouting too much," said the former GB international. "We scored early in the Olympic qualifying tournament final against India (in Chile in April) and today felt a bit like that. "It certainly helped ease the nerves because we were nervous, to say the least." British captain Ben Hawes, sent off with a yellow card in the second half, added: "We are in a tough pool and have to win every game, so I am definitely happy to win this one." Britain still face an uphill battle to qualify for a semi-final place from a pool that also includes reigning champions Australia and the Netherlands, who they play next on Wednesday, 1400 BST. In the other pool B game gold-medal favourites Australia started the defence of their title in style by thrashing Canada 6-1. Des Abbott knocked in three, while Fergus Kavanagh, Eddie Ockenden and Grant Schubert slotted home one apiece. "It felt nice to hit a few goals. I think probably the main thing is starting off well ... coming into a tournament," Ockenden said. "They are not the world number one team for nothing," Canada's coach Louis Mendonca said. "They make you pay for your mistakes." Australia have come into the Games as favourites after winning a record ninth Champions Trophy and dethroning Germany at the top of the rankings. New Zealand beat higher ranked South Korea 3-1 in pool A while a strong German performance brushed aside China 4-1. Hayden Shaw converted three penalty corners in New Zealand's surprise victory over South Korea. Two more first round matches are due later on Monday with Spain meeting Belgium and the Netherlands, silver medallists four years ago, taking on South Africa.
