Video - Hoy leads GB one-two in keirin

Great Britain's Chris Hoy and Ross Edgar took Olympic gold and silver with brilliant performances in the final of the men's keirin.

Hoy lived up to his billing as red-hot favourite, with his raw power simply blowing the rest of the field away.

It was his third gold at the Games, making him the most successful Scottish Olympian of all time.

And Edgar timed his late burst superbly to beat Japan's Kiyofumi Nagai into the bronze medal position on the line.

Hoy delighted with keirin gold

Hoy had been in a class of his own throughout the rounds, with none of his rivals able to live with his ability to burst clear of the pack at will.

And his latest gold medal brought down the curtain on an astonishing day of success for Team GB's cyclists, with a total of five medals won.

Hoy's gold was the 700th medal won by Team GB in the history of the modern Games.

Additionally, Rebecca Romero and Wendy Houvenaghel will fight for gold and silver in an all-British women's pursuit final on Sunday.

"I don't know how to sum it up," Hoy told BBC Sport.

"It's just beyond expectations, and it's a day we'll remember for a long time.

"I'm very emotional, but I'm trying to keep a cap on it because I've got another race to go.

"And after the Kilo (Hoy's previous speciality, which was dropped from the Olympic Games ) was dropped after Athens, there were parts of me thinking that it could be the end of my individual career.

"I didn't necessarily want to go right from the gun, but with a lap-and-a-half to go, that was it - everything.

"And it was just fantastic for Ross to get silver too."

Edgar missed out on selection for Britain's gold medal-winning team sprint line-up, and he admitted his silver medal had parly made up for that disappointment.

"The team sprint was hard to watch, the guys put in a phenomenal ride," said Edgar.

"It was a shame I couldn't be part of team but I'm delighted today, I can't put it into words."
