Heavy rain played havoc with the Thursday's Olympic schedule |
Thursday's Olympic canoe and kayak events were postponed until Friday after a day of heavy rain in Shunyi. Only the men's C2 canoe semi-finals were possible, with German duo Felix Michel and Sebastian Piersig recording the fastest time en route to the final. Double Olympic champions Peter and Pavol Hochschorner of Slovakia also made it through. The semi-finals of the women's K1 kayak slalom will now take place on Friday, which was meant to be a rest day. The men's canoe double started under gloomy skies and heavy rain with coaches and team-mates needing umbrellas as they ran down the side of the course shouting encouragement. In the women's K1 kayak, Slovakia's defending Olympic champion Elena Kaliska recorded the best combined time of 186.19 after Wednesday's heats. She'll be among 15 athletes who will compete in Friday's semi-finals in the hope of reaching the final later in the day. Great Britain's Fiona Pennie failed to make the semis after finishing 17th in the heats.
