Fell and Livingston go in the women's modern pentathlon |
Britain have high hopes for more gold in two events on Friday with BMX rider Shanaze Reade and canoeist Tim Brabants hot favourites to win their finals. Rain forced the postponement of Reade's event on Thursday but that is unlikely to have upset the 19-year-old world champion, who competes at 0200 BST. Brabants is a world K1 canoe flatwater champion, but faces stiff opposition in the 1000m final (at 0830 BST). There are 21 finals in total, including the athletics' 4x100m relays. The women's and men's events (at 1415 and 1510 BST respectively) will be without US quartets, after both teams failed with their baton changes in the heats. The British men's combination also suffered as a result of a poor final-leg exchange between Marlon Devonish and Craig Pickering, but Team GB will be represented by the women who impressed in their qualifier and will fancy picking up a medal. All the athletics finals take place on Friday between 1200 and 1525 BST. Others include the: women's long jump, women's 5000m, men's pole vault, decathlon and 50km walk (which starts at 0030 BST). Britain have several other medal hopes, with Katy Livingston in with a shout in the women's modern pentathlon (0130-1300 BST). The Sheffield Wednesday supporter won bronze at the world championships and claimed her first World Cup gold medal earlier this year. She goes in the five-event discipline along with team-mate Heather Fell of Plymouth. There are mouthwatering semi-final bouts in the boxing, featuring three Britons, who are all guaranteed bronze. First up is 22-year-old middleweight James DeGale who will face Ireland's Darren Sutherland (0800 BST), followed by the men's light heavyweight contest between Tony Jeffries and another Irishman, Kenny Egan (1200 BST). And last but not least, super heavyweight David Price of Liverpool takes on Italy's reigning world champion Roberto Cammarelle (1445 BST). Elsewhere, 14-year-old Tom Daley will try to erase the poor showing in the 10m synchronised diving with a good performance in the individual 10m preliminaries (between 1200 and 1545 BST). Pete Waterfield, who was fifth in the individual discipline in Athens, also goes in the event. There are other golds to be decided in the beach volleyball (0200 BST), taekwondo (1200 BST), table tennis (1230 BST) and hockey (1330 BST).
