Canada snatch skeleton gold

Canada's Jon Montgomery produced a stunning final slide to win the men's skeleton from Latvia's Martins Dukurs.

Montgomery was second behind Dukurs after each of the first three runs, but his 52.36-second final run, saw him eclipse the Latvian by 0.07 seconds.

Russia's Alexander Tretiakov was one second back in bronze.

Britain's Kristan Bromley had his two quickest slides but could not improve from his overnight sixth, while Adam Pengilly finished in 18th.

"It's been just a little bit frustrating because I know I was getting there," Bromley told BBC Sport.

"That last run had a few mistakes but I know I was on my way had I had a bit more time on the ice.

"But this Games has taught me two things. Firstly I couldn't compete with Dukurs or Tretyakov with regard to their starts, in that respect they are phenomenal.

"And I just couldn't compete with the Canadians as a result of how much time they had on the ice."

Dukurs, who had been almost flawless in the first three runs, looked set to win Latvia's first Winter Olympics gold medal until he bumped into the wall coming off the final bend.

That cost him a fraction of a second, enough to give Montgomery, who was watching at the bottom of the track, victory in three minutes, 29.73 seconds.

Tomass Dukurs, brother of Martins, finished fourth.
