Fischbacher upsets Vonn in Super-G

Austria's Andrea Fischbacher struck gold in a chaotic women's super-G, while Lindsey Vonn finished third to take her second medal in Whistler.

Fifteen of the 53 skiers failed to finish the course, most having trouble with tight right turn Ladner's Roll.

Starting 17th, American Vonn took the lead but Fischbacher bettered her time by 0.74 seconds, two runs later, and Slovenia's Tina Maze took silver.

Britain's Chemmy Alcott was 20th after an error near the top of the hill.

The Londoner took Ladner's Roll wide and was 3.32 seconds behind Fischbacher.

"It's a really fast course and it was a really tough race, but I enjoyed it," she said.

"It was definitely challenging and I love a challenge. I didn't really go for it enough.

"I made a judgement error and lost a ridiculous amount of speed. You can't make any mistakes here."

Alcott will take part in two more events, the giant slalom on Wednesday and Friday's slalom.

The Austrian victory was a first gold medal of the Games for the so-called 'Wunderteam'.

Fischbacher navigated her way down Franz's Run in 1 min 20.14 sec as she took advantage of a tricky course arranged by one of her coaches.

"It was really crazy," said the 24-year-old. "It was a really straight course and you had to push from start to finish."

Slovenian Maze, her country's first Olympic medallist in alpine skiing since the 1994 Lillehammer Games, thrust her arms in the air and whooped in delight.

"On the start I was really nervous. I saw the girls making mistakes, I saw the lines. I was kind of expecting it would be like this," she said.

Vonn won Monday's downhill but crashed out of the super combined the following day and has been struggling with a shin injury.

She made it through the tricky section without a problem but then lost nearly half a second on the bottom section of the course.

Vonn then faced an agonising wait as Italy's Johanna Schnarf came within five hundredths of a second of her time.

"Once I got past those difficult sections, I kind of backed off the gas pedal," she said.

"I felt like I just didn't ski as aggressively as I could have, and I think that's where I lost the race."

"Fischbacher came down and annihilated my time but I thought I did a good job despite everything. I got another Olympic medal and that's all that's important to me."

Vonn played down suggestions from before the Games that she would aim to sweep all five Alpine skiing events, with the giant slalom still to come on Wednesday and the slalom on Friday.

"I was never hoping for five gold medals, it was media hype somewhat," she told BBC Sport.

"I've had some good runs in GS and have been on the podium in slalom this year.

"I would be happy with a medal in any of those two events. I'm definitely not a favourite in either."
