Eley is looking to improve on his fifth place at the 2006 games in Turin |
Jon Eley and Sarah Lindsay are among Great Britain's seven-strong short track speed skating team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Eley is joined by Anthony Douglas, Paul Worth, Jack Whelbourne and Tom Iveson in the men's competition while Elise Christie completes the women's entry. GB's best medal hopes are considered to be Eley and the men's relay team. Eley, who finished fifth in the 2006 Games, said it was "a brilliant feeling and a great honour to be selected". The 2008 500m European champion added: "I've remembered a lot of lessons from competing in Turin nearly four years ago and I'm looking forward to improving on the fifth place I earned out there." | We have qualified the largest number of athletes since the discipline was first included in 1992 Andy Hunt Team GB chef de mission |
The team has increased in size from four at the Turin Games. "It is particularly pleasing to see that we have qualified the largest number of athletes since the discipline was first included in 1992," said Andy Hunt, Team GB boss for the Winter Olympics. "This is testament to the strength in depth that has been developed in GB short track speed skating in recent years." Lindsay will be competing in her third Olympics at the age of 29. "This is what makes it all worthwhile. The hard work, the injuries, the long hours training - they're all worth it when you come to be selected to represent your country," she said. "It will be a special feeling for me to pull on the colours of Team GB. It's inspirational." The 2010 Winter Olympics take place from 12-28 February, with the short track events taking place in the first week. Great Britain have now announced their competitors in the curling, figure skating and short track speed skating events, with the rest of the athletes to be revealed on 26 January.
