Highlights - Farah storms to Euro 10,000m gold

Double European gold medallist Mo Farah has been named the track-and-field athlete of the year by the British Olympic Association.

Farah, who won the 5,000m and 10,000m titles in Barcelona, was chosen ahead of heptathlon star Jessica Ennis.

Rebecca Adlington was rewarded for her golden double at the Commonwealth Games by being named aquatics performer of the year, edging out diver Tom Daley.

Beth Tweddle (gymnastics) and Amy Williams (skeleton) were also honoured.

The awards are given to the top-performing athlete of the year in each of the 33 summer and winter Olympic sports.

Adlington wins second gold at Commonwealths

Farah's award comes after he missed out on a place in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist, which was drawn up by a panel of 30 sports editors from national and regional newspapers and magazines.

Ennis finished third at the BBC awards for the second year in a row.

Adlington, who won the 400m and 800m freestyle in Delhi, said: "I'm proud and honoured to have won this award given the achievements of so many British swimmers at both the European Championships and Commonwealth Games."

Tweddle, who reclaimed her world title on the uneven bars, together with European golds on the bars and the floor, said: "I'm really happy to win in what has been an outstanding year for British gymnastics.

Williams admits the reaction to her Winter Olympics gold has surprised her

"Becoming world champion for the third time in my career in 2010 has given me great confidence towards my aim of reaching the podium at the London 2012 Olympic Games."

Williams said the award, which followed her Winter Olympics triumph in the women's bob skeleton - Britain's first individual Winter Olympics gold medal for 30 years - "caps a really special year for me".
