The stadium will host the athletics events in 2012 |
Lord Coe has called for London's Olympic Stadium to be considered as a possible football World Cup venue even though it will have a running track. It could be named as one of the 10 venues for the Football Association's bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. "I see no reason why it should not be used," said Coe, London 2012 chairman and non-executive director of England's World Cup bid. "If with the Olympic Stadium you can build out again, then why not use it?" Some critics have said the stadium in east London would be unsuitable for football, but Coe picked out examples where the relationship has worked. | 606: DEBATE |
"The last three Champions League finals have been played in those sorts of stadiums," he added. "The last World Cup final was played at the stadium in Berlin where the World Athletics Championships will be in August. "I see no reason why the Olympic Stadium should not be used and the evaluation team at the FA are working on this now and will be looking at this." A decision is expected to be made at the end of the year.
