Terry won two bronze medals at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics |
British archer Simon Terry claimed his first gold medal of the World Cup series with a win in Antalya, Turkey. After defeating Olympic champion Victor Ruban 107-106 in the first round, Terry saw off Korea's Jin Hyek Oh and India's Jayanta Talukdar to make the final. A 110-106 victory over France's Thomas Aubert followed to secure gold. Combined with the bronze medal he won in April's Santo Domingo event, the result moves the 35-year-old to second place in the men's overall standings. If he remains in the top four after the next and final stage of the series in Shanghai starting on 4 August, Terry, from Grantham, will book his place in September's Grand Final in Copenhagen. | 606: DEBATE |
Following his win over Ruban on Friday morning, Terry had scored 117 out of a possible 120 to sweep past Markiyan Ivashko and overcome Poland's Piotr Piatek 116-110 to reach the quarter-finals. "It's a fantastic performance from Simon, he has been outstanding all week and thoroughly deserves this," said Archery GB performance director Sara Symington. Terry could be joined in the Grand Final by Coventry's Nicky Hunt in the women's compound event. Although she could not repeat her gold medal success from her last outing in the Croatian city of Porec, a fifth-place finish puts her fifth in the overall standings. Hunt did go some way to making up for her quarter-final defeat by claiming a bronze in the mixed team tournament alongside Duncan Busby. Results from earlier in the weekend saw Larry Godfrey reach the last 16 while Alan Wills went out in the round of 32. British women Charlotte Burgess and Naomi Folkard also fell in the last 32. Britain's mixed recurve team of Terry and Folkard finished 12th overall. And the men's and women's teams both fell at the first elimination hurdle - Wills, Terry and Godfrey were beaten 217-205 by Italy, while Folkard, Burgess and Emma Downie lost 215-196 to the top-ranked Korean trio.
