Forward Cavanagh was man of the match when Tyrone beat favourites Kerry in the All-Ireland football final at Croke Park in September. Cavanagh pipped his team-mate Brian Dooher and the other nominee Colm Cooper of Kerry to take the top prize. The young footballer winner was Kerry's Tommy Walsh while Kilkenny's Eoin Larkin was voted hurler of the year.
