John McCloskey was Derry team trainer this season |
John McCloskey, who was team trainer in the final year of Paddy Crozier's reign, is among six nominees for the Oak Leaf county managerial job. Bookies' favourite Damien Cassidy and McCloskey have been nominated along with Brian McGilligan, Liam Bradley, John Brennan and Tony Scullion. Current Derry hurling boss McGilligan has said he is interested in the role. McGilligan, Brennan, Scullion and ex-minor boss Niall Conway have been nominated for the U21 manager's job. McCloskey, Armagh team trainer during Joe Kernan's reign, joined Paddy Crozier's backroom staff last October and his methods were reported to have impressed the Derry players.
After Derry's exit from the Championship this summer, a number of media reports suggested that Derry players believed that McCloskey would be well equipped to succeed Paddy Crozier in the top job.
Both McGilligan and Conway incurred the wrath of the Derry county board during the summer and were served with disciplinary charges.
McGilligan was unhappy at the county's board support for hurling while Conway quit the minor football job after claiming that his squad had not received adequate resources.
Conway's Derry minors were narrowly beaten in last year's All-Ireland Final.
McGilligan has also been nominated to remain on as Derry senior hurling and under-21 hurling manager along with Sean McCloskey.
