Derry hurling manager Brian McGilligan has emerged as a contender for the county's vacant football boss post.

The Dungiven man has been proposed by several clubs to succeed Paddy Crozier who stood down after three years.

Nominations close on Tuesday night and the leading candidate is believed to be Damien Cassidy, a former selector and All-Ireland winning player.

McGilligan is awaiting the outcome of a disciplinary hearing over comments made about the treatment of the hurlers.

Derry officials were known to be unhappy about criticisism relating to the level of support from the county board.
