Joe Kernan has resigned as Armagh manager in the wake of the Orchard team's exit from the championship.

Armagh won their first All-Ireland title in 2002 in Kernan's first year in charge and they lost out to Tyrone in the decider 12 months later.

The Crossmaglen man also guided Armagh to four Ulster SFC triumphs and a national league title in 2005.

Armagh were defeated by Donegal in the Ulster SFC before Derry beat Kernan's team in the All-Ireland qualifiers.

Kernan recently reflected on his six-year reign in the Orchard hotseat.

"I'd like to think we were successful - people would maybe say we underachieved and if we did then so be it," he told BBC Sport.

"We brought a lot of joy and happiness and I think we were good for the GAA.

"We got the blood boiling in a lot of people and certainly brought a lot of entertainment."

Kernan established his reputation during a hugely successful spell as manager of club side Crossmaglen Rangers.

606: DEBATE

The former Armagh county player stepped down from the post in 2000 after Rangers had secured a third All-Ireland club title in four years.

Kernan served as Armagh assistant manager when Paddy Moriarty was boss in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The top post was his a decade later and his Orchard side went on to create history with their thrilling 1-12 to 0-14 win over Kerry in the All-Ireland decider at Croke Park.
