Joe Kernan has been confirmed as the new Armagh football manager.

The former Crossmaglen boss has been appointed for a three-year term.

Kernan told the BBC that he was "delighted to be appointed".

"I haven't yet finalised the full composition of my backroom team but I can confirm that John McCloskey will be team trainer," said Kernan.

Fitness guru McCloskey worked with Kernan during the new Armagh boss' glorious reign at club level with his native Crossmaglen.

Kernan guided Crossmaglen to three All-Ireland Club titles in four years.

He was the obvious candidate to take the Armagh job when Brian McAlinden and Brian Canavan stood down after this year's Championship.

Kernan has been out of the game since February when he relinquished his duties at Crossmaglen, but has recently been involved with Monaghan side Carrickmacross.

Canavan and McAlinden won consecutive Ulster titles with Armagh in 1999 and 2000 and Kernan has a tough act to follow.

However, Kernan has all the credentials to make a success of the job and despite their early exit from this year's Championship, Armagh still possess one of the strongest squads in the country.

Kernan previously worked under Paddy Moriarty during his spell as Armagh manager.
