Enda Muldoon celebrates after scoring the only goal of the game |
Derry stunned All-Ireland champions Tyrone with a superb victory in an ill-tempered Ulster SFC quarter-final at Healy Park on Sunday. The Oak Leaf side dominated the first half and led 0-6 to 0-0 at the break with Tyrone's Kevin Hughes sent-off for an off-the-ball strike.
The Red Hands improved after the break but Enda Muldoon netted on 48 minutes to end any hope of a comeback.
Derry will now play the winners of next Sunday's Donegal v Down game.
It was a nightmare opening 35 minutes for the Red Hands, failing to register a score and having a man sent off.
Tyrone forward Owen Mulligan and his marker Kevin McGuckin set the tone for a fiesty game by receiving yellow cards after a second minute tussle.
Derry opened their account after five minutes through Paddy Bradley with two Enda Muldoon frees and a Eoin Bradley point quick to follow.
Hughes was shown a straight red card on 18 minutes for a punch to the body of Liam Hinphey.
The Oak Leaf side were first to the breaking ball and more potent in attack - Tyrone chalked up seven wides in the half.
A third free from Muldoon and a Joe O'Kane point in injury-time left Tyrone facing a huge task in the second half.
Paddy Bradley increased the gap with a free just after the break before Tyrone finally got on the scoreboard.
Substitute Joe McMahon pointed and then Davy Harte added another to give the Red Hands hope of a comeback.
But Derry snuffed out any chance of a fightback with Muldoon's goal, the forward slipping the ball under keeper Pascal McConnell into the net after good work from Paddy Bradley and Barry McGoldrick.
Tyrone midfielder Sean Cavanagh was stretchered off after suffering concussion although he recovered minutes later.
Mulligan scored the final point of the game but it was mere consolation for the pre-match favourites.
