Fermanagh edge out Donegal

Brendan Devenney reacted outrageously to his sending off
Fermanagh qualified for their second successive All-Ireland Football Quarter-Final when they claimed a 1-10 to 0-12 extra-time win over Donegal.

The Ernesiders just about deserved their success over an indisciplined Donegal outfit.

Donegal's Brendan Devenney could now be hit with a 12-month ban after pushing referee Joe McQuillan following his sending-off in normal time.

Brian McEniff's side then had Stephen McDermott dismissed in extra-time.

The Clones game was delayed by 10 minutes because of crowd congestion although the bulk of the support seemed to be for the Ernesiders.

Donegal were the sharper side early on and led 0-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes with Brendan Boyle also having a goal attempt come back off the woodwork.

However, Fermanagh then hit the crucial score of the match in the 13th minute with Eamon Maguire hammering the ball to the Donegal net after a sweeping move out of defence.

Donegal were bossing the midfield exchanges but Fermanagh were showing the greater economy of effort in fashioning scores.

The Ernesiders led by 1-4 to 0-6 at the break with Donegal, having already, withdrawn Colm McFadden, the hero of the Ulster Semi-Final win over Tyrone.

Martin McGrath took only 11 seconds to extend Fermanagh's lead after the interval but Donegal then hit five of the next six scores to take what appeared to be a firm grip on proceedings.

Donegal had at least three great opportunities to extend their 0-11 to 1-6 lead but the turning point then came when Devenney got himself sent off for his second bookable offence in the 59th minute.

The decision looked a tad harsh but that couldn't excuse the St Eunan's player's outrageous reaction with him appearing to push referee McQuillan on three occasions.

The incident gave Fermanagh renewed belief while Donegal, in contrast, totally lost their discipline.

Shane McDermott's point left the minimum between the sides with 10 minutes left and despite a number of bad misses, they eventually did pick off an equaliser in the 68th minute through the lively McGrath.

Both side had chances to win the game in injury-time with Roper contriving to send the ball wide from 14 yards and Colm Bradley leaving a '45 short.

However, the impetus appeared to be with Fermanagh for extra-time even though Donegal were back to 15 players.

That wasn't actually the case for long as Stephen McDermott stupidly got himself sent off for a dreadful lunging tackle on a Fermanagh player.

Two Fermanagh points in extra-time ultimately proved enough to seal their last eight place with substitute Tom Brewster and Stephen Maguire notching the scores.

Colm McFadden, who had returned to the fray, cut Fermanagh's lead late in the first extra-time period but it was to prove the final point of the game.

Incredibly, the off-form Adrian Sweeney and Michael Hegarty missed frees from central positions inside the 21' metre line in the second period.

However, Fermanagh had chances of their own in the closing 10 minutes with Donegal goalkeeper Paul Durcan make the last in a series of fine saves throughout the afternoon to prevent a second Erneside goal.

Fermanagh can look forward to a quarter-final place. For Donegal, the recriminations will begin after the well-publicised events of the past fortnight.
