All-Ireland champions Tyrone produced a powerful second half performance to see off Galway by 1-16 to 0-11 in the third round of the qualifiers at Croke Park. Mickey Harte's men held a slender one-point advantage early in the second period but then took over to win with eight to spare.
The match saw the return of Peter Canavan for the first time since the 2003 All-Ireland final triumph.
He came on as a replacement and marked his comeback with a well-taken point.
Brian McGuigan got the only goal of the game after 11 minutes, jinking past Patrick Clancy before shooting past Galway goalkeeper Brian O'Donoghue.
Full-forward Owen Mulligan got five points for the Red Hands with four for Stephen O'Neil, three for Sean Cavanagh and one each from Canavan, Brian Dooher, Shane Sweeney and Philip Jordan.
However, Dooher was not entirely satisfied with Tyrone's overall display.
"We will have to work harder. We were a bit ropey in the first half," said the Tyrone skipper.
"But we got enough points in the second half to see us through.
"We upped the workrate in the second half and had a fair amount of wides so I think we deserved to win."
Dooher also welcomed the return of five-times All Star Canavan.
"It was great to see Peter back. He has done a lot of work on his own and this was his reward today," said Dooher.
"He will be pushing hard to start the next game I am sure."
