Ireland 77-41 Australia Ireland will take a massive 36-point advantage into next Sunday's second International Rules Test after outplaying a disorganised Aussie side.
Ireland were on fire at Croke Park with brilliant performances from Dessie Dolan who along with Stephen McDonnell collected 12 points.
Mattie Forde chipped in with 10 while skipper Padraig Joyce contributed nine.
The Aussies relied on Nathan Brown for most of their scores. He hit 17 while skipper James Hird collected seven.
Australia are going for a hat-trick of series victories. This is the 11th meeting between the two in the compromise game between Australian Rules and GAA football.
At present each country has five victories apiece, but Ireland took a big step towards edging ahead in the record following the one-way traffic in Dublin on Sunday when Ireland won 77-41.
They were quick out of the traps and before Australia had time to get into their position they had a 10-point advantage. With Tadhg Kennelly hitting a behind and Cavanagh, Dolan, and Benny Coulter all hitting three-pointers.
It took Australia a full seven minutes to trouble the scorers when Brown hit a behind.
But Ireland were able to take a first quarter lead of 28-5 back to the dressing room.
That was helped with a stunning goal by Armagh's McDonnell who started the move and then accepted a great return ball from Coulter to crack a shot past the startled Mal Michael.
Ireland were similarly disposed in the second quarter as they stretched that lead to 43-13 helped in no small way by a great burst down the middle by Forde who finished with a sweet shot into the net.
Australia actually won the third quarter, but still trailed 57-31. Brown quickly settled the Aussies with the perfect start when he scored their first six-pointer.
However, Ireland had two chances to stretch their lead but Cavanagh and Paul Galvin missed open goals.
However, Joyce strode majestically downfield to rifle home goal number three for the Irish.
Ireland again strolled through the final quarter, surprising the Aussies with their strength in the tackle, pace and handling.
While Brown continued to keep the Aussies ticking over, Ireland picked up points from all around the park to finish comfortable winners.
