Geoffrey McGonagle scored one of Derry's first half goals |
Derry hurlers claimed a morale-boosting 2-14 to 0-12 win over London in Sunday's Guinness Ulster Championship game at Ruislip. Many pundits had predicted that London might defeat the Oak Leaf county.
Geoffrey McGonagle and Liam Hinphey scored Derry's goals in the first half as the Oak Leafers led 2-3 to 0-8 at the interval.
Derry ended the match with 14 players after the dismissal of Ruairi Convery with a straight red card.
As expected, McGonagle started for Derry after his decision to rejoin the county hurling squad in midweek following his recent departure from the Oak Leaf senior football panel.
His inclusion was a huge boost for the struggling Oak Leaf outfit who had narrowly avoided an embarrassing relegation to Division Three of the National League.
McGonagle's goal came from a free in the first half.
In the big hurling match of the day in Munster, Waterford had an unexpectedly comprehensive 3-21 to 1-8 win over shellshocked Clare.
Dan Shanahan hit all Waterford's goals in front of nearly 25,000 people at Semple Stadium.
