Ireland manager Peter McGrath now has to decide on a new skipper |
Ireland captain Pauric Joyce is out of next month's International Rules series against Australia. Joyce aggravated an old groin injury during a training session with the Irish squad and requires surgery.
Ireland boss Peter McGrath said the squad had lost an "exceptional talent" adding that he would decide on a new captain in the coming days.
The two Test matches in the compromise rules code will take place on 17 and 24 October at Croke Park.
Cork's Graham Canty captained the Irish squad last year in Australia and he is part of the panel again this season.
There are 14 players from Ulster counties in Ireland's provisional 42-player panel.
