Larkin made complaint
Down footballer James McCartan
James McCartan was approached by the Gardai in August

Westmeath player Kenny Larkin has revealed that he made the complaint to the Gardai which led to Down's James McCartan being approached by two members of the force.

McCartan is at the centre of a GAC investigation into an incident during a challenge match between Down and Westmeath in May which left Larkin with a broken jaw.

Immediately after a GAC meeting in August attended by McCartan, the Down veteran was spoken to by two Gardai.

Larkin, who is a trainee Garda, has confirmed that he submitted a report about the incident to a solicitor.

As a result of the incident, Larkin had to have three metal plates inserted into his jaw and he only recently returned to the game.

The appearance of two plain clothes garda after the GAC hearing angered top GAA officials who claimed that the development could hinder the sporting organisation's own investigation.

The findings of the GAA investigation have not yet been delivered.

McCartan, who is manager of the Queens University GAA team, was not sent off during the match.
