Donegal 0-14 Galway 1-11 Michael Meehan shots past Tony Blake for Galway's goal |
Donegal will have to do it all again after sharing the spoils with Galway in a thrilling All-Ireland quarter-final at Croke Park on Monday.
The Ulster boys came back from the dead and appeared to be heading for glory after taking the lead two minutes from the end.
But an injury-time point from Galway skipper Kevin Walsh booked a replay next Sunday at Castlebar (1730BST throw-in).
Brendan Devenney scored five points for Donegal while Paul Joyce knocked over four frees for Galway.
Outsiders Donegal had chances both in the first half and the second to bury Galway.
But each time the Tribesmen came back and midway through the second period, looked to be heading for an easy victory when they held a four-point lead.
But Donegal changed their style of play and engineered space down the middle to slowly claw their way back into the game.
Points from Devenney, Paul McGonigle, Adrian Sweeney and John Haran gave them what looked like the winning lead.
But in a nerve-tingling final few minutes, Galway's Joe Bergin fisted onto the crossbar and then a last-gasp shot by Walsh saw the game shared.
Galway had got things up and running with Padraig Joyce firing over a free in the third minute, but then Donegal took over with their short-passing game bemusing Galway.
But they were brought back down to earth in the 24th minute with their tactics giving way to allow Michael Meenan to fire home high into the net from a mistake.
Strong wind
That brought the teams level and Galway nudged ahead at the break with Joyce putting them into the lead for the first time since the fifth minute.
Although Donegal took an early lead, they had trouble finding their target against a strong win as Galway slowly pulled away.
But then came that great fightback and the Donegal dream was only shattered by Walsh.
